If you create a complicated new password, you’re likely to forget it again. If you reuse an existing one, you’re putting your security at risk. Office template move house. But with 1Password, you can create strong, unique passwords for all your accounts, and you don’t even need to remember them. You’ll never have to click “forgot password”.
Obviously, this is the one password you will need to remember and is the reason that the program is named 1Password. I want to address a couple of issues that arise from time to time regarding the master password. There is no way to recover a lost or forgotten master password so choose wisely. If you already have one, just follow these steps: Got to the page for ‘forgot LastPass Master Password. Put your email ID in the box provided and hit ‘Send Hint'. Check your email inbox, look at the password hint and, if it makes you remember the password, use that to log in.
If you have at least one standalone vault in 1Password, the password for your first standalone vault (called “Primary”) will unlock 1Password. You can change your Master Password in preferences:
1password Lost Master Password
- Open and unlock 1Password.
- From the Vault menu, choose Switch to Vault > Primary.
- From the 1Password menu, choose Preferences.
- Click the Security icon, then click Change Master Password.
If you have at least one standalone vault in 1Password, the password for your first standalone vault (called “Primary”) will unlock 1Password. You can change your Master Password in settings:

- Open and unlock 1Password.
- Tap the Settings icon, then tap Security.
- Tap Change Master Password.
The password for the first vault you added to the app will unlock 1Password, whether it is a standalone vault or a vault in a 1Password account.
If the first vault you added is in a 1Password account
Change your Master Password on 1Password.com:
- Sign in to your account on 1Password.com.
- Click your name in the top right and choose My Profile.
- Click Change Master Password.
After you change your Master Password, update it in the app:
- Open and unlock 1Password using your old Master Password.
- Click the red authentication error banner and sign in with your new Master Password.
If the first vault you added is a standalone vault
Edit your vault to change your Master Password:
- Click All Vaults at the top of the sidebar or choose View > Show/Hide Vaults (Ctrl + D). If you have a different vault selected, you’ll see its name instead of All Vaults.
- Clicknext to the standalone vault you want to edit and select “Edit vault”.
If you have at least one standalone vault in 1Password, the password for your first standalone vault (called “Primary”) will unlock 1Password. You can change your Master Password in settings:
- Open and unlock 1Password.
- Tap the Settings icon, then tap Security.
- Tap Change Master Password.
Recover using Touch ID or Apple Watch
If 1Password is locked, you’ll see a message that “1Password is trying to unlock.”
To approve and unlock 1Password, place your finger on the Touch ID sensor on your Mac or double-click the side button on your Apple Watch.
If you don’t see the prompt, click the Touch ID button or Apple Watch button on the lock screen. Version 1.0.

Your ability to unlock the app with Touch ID or Apple Watch will eventually expire. Take action immediately to find your Master Password or rescue your data:
- Look for a Login item in your Personal vault named “1Password Account”. It may contain your Master Password.
- Export your data from 1Password while you still have access. You can then create a new account or vault and import your data into it.
Recover using Touch ID or Face ID
If you use 1Password on an iOS device with Touch ID or Face ID, try to unlock the app using it.

Recover using Windows Hello
If 1Password is locked, try to unlock the app using Windows Hello.
If you aren’t prompted to use it when you open 1Password, click the Windows Hello button below the Master Password field or press Enter when the Master Password field is blank.
If you’re prompted to unlock with Windows Hello, but your fingerprint or face isn’t recognized, click “More choices” and unlock the app with your device PIN.

If you use 1Password on an Android device with Biometric Unlock, try to unlock the app by placing your finger on the fingerprint sensor, or let your device scan your face or eyes, until 1Password unlocks.
If you aren’t prompted to use Biometric Unlock when you open 1Password, tap the fingerprint button below the Master Password field or enter your PIN code, if you set one up.
