Learning has never been so easy!

This how-to is to help anyone that needs to save an email attachment from outlook to a network folder easily. I use this as a make shift EDI. We receive a flat file then it saves the attachment, deletes the email, then FTP's the attachment to our ERP system.

I have got Outlook 365 newly installed in my company laptop. I am having trouble navigating, as features are completely different from Outlook 2013. On specific issue: 1) I can preview the attachment, even edit in preview mode. But not able to download it? Kindly help, on how to option to download, or 'save as' option. A.,) With outlook open press Alt+F11 to open VB editor B.) Click Insert - Then New Module C.) Paste the following code into the module. Sub saveAttachtoDisk(itm As Outlook.MailItem) Dim objAtt As Outlook.Attachment.

Also note this code renames the file if you would like it to keep its naming format remove the following lines of code

Dim dateFormat
dateFormat = Format(Now, 'mmdd H-mm')

And the little piece that states '& dateFormat'

2 Steps total

Step 1: Create VB

A.,) With outlook open press Alt+F11 to open VB editor
B.) Click Insert - Then New Module
C.) Paste the following code into the module

Sub saveAttachtoDisk(itm As Outlook.MailItem)
Dim objAtt As Outlook.Attachment
Dim saveFolder As String
Dim dateFormat
dateFormat = Format(Now, 'mmdd H-mm')
saveFolder = 'Your Network Folder'
For Each objAtt In itm.Attachments
objAtt.SaveAsFile saveFolder & ' & dateFormat
Set objAtt = Nothing
Next
End Sub

D.) Then Press File Ctrl+S to save
E.) Then Press Alt+F11 to close and go back to outlook

Step 2: Create Rule to run

A.) Open Rules and Alerts in Outlook
B.) This next step is based on your application. If you look at the attachment I have you will see this runs when the email arrives. It then saves a copy of the attachment. You could also use this to move the email...or delete it entirely.

Just to share a few things. This script also renames the document...When I was using this I ran into an issue where if the attachment had the same name it would overwrite it so I used a date stamp naming convention. To remove that and retain its original format. Remove the following
Dim dateFormat
dateFormat = Format(Now, 'mmdd H-mm')
Also replace the '& dateFormat with & objAtt.DisplayName

I've seen a lot of codes like this which are awesome, but they only seem to download the first attachment in the email to the user. Any thoughts?

Kipz have you validated with this that it isnt saving all of the attachments? Please PM me if not and I can help you walk through it.

This script is brilliant, even for an idiot who doesnt understand VB I got it to work :)
What I am now searching for is to change the script slightly so that it keeps the original file name and appends the date at the end? also I seem to lose the file extension at the moment?
Is this something you could easily answer?
I will continue to search for an answer in the meantime.

If you need to keep the original format just remove these few lines of code.
Dim dateFormat
dateFormat = Format(Now, 'mmdd H-mm')
And the little piece that states '& dateFormat'

This is awesome and works great for our medical clinic...Tanks. I am now working on trying to get it to save to multiple network locations, How can i add a second storage location?, (save to one place or the other not both).

I've been looking for something like this for a long time. However, I need the filename to be renamed as the subject. Also the subject will have this format: 'ARBEIDSORDRE 502491/2013 ,VF52014' (nubers will vary each time) so something that removes the 'ARBEIDSORDRE' and the '/' from the name would be nice.

Open the temp folder in Outlook

You can do as follows to open the temp folder in Outlook as follows.

1. Press the Windows + R keys at the same time to open the Run dialog box, and type regeditinto the Open text box. See screenshot:

2. Click the OK button in the User Account Control dialog box.

3. In the Registry Editor dialog box, please expand the folders as follows.

1). If you are using Outlook 2013, please double click to expand the KEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Office > 15.0 > Outlook;

2). For Outlook 2010, double click to expand the KEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Office > 14.0 > Outlook;

3). For Outlook 2007, double click to expand the KEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Office > 12.0 > Outlook.

4. Scroll down to select the Security folder in the left pane, and then double click to open the OutlookSecureTempfolder in the right pane. See screenshot:

5. When the Edit String dialog box popping up, copy the path in the Value data box, and then click the OK button.

6. Close the Registry Editor dialog box.

7. Double click the Computer icon in your desktop to open the explorer, and then paste the path you have copied above to the path box. See screenshot:

8. After pasting the path, press the Enter key. Then you will see the attachments you have opened in emails are staying inside the folder.

This saved me a day's work when I edited a file from an attachment and kept saving to the temp directory, but then the file didn't show up when I searched the whole C: for it.
